Ghetto Majlis

Who Gets Paid for Digital Labor?

Entering into a dialogue with the rich history of the the Majlis as a dynamic space used for leisure, socialization, hospitality, and business dealings throughout the Gulf region and beyond, Ghetto Majlis is a room-sized installation that re-envisions the idea of the Majlis as symbol and ritual in twenty-first century Dubai.

The Majlis can be found throughout the Emirates, but as traditional practices and objects become dispersed and delocalized in the face of accelerated modernity and neoliberal capitalism, one has to ask: what is the significance of the majlis today, as a signifier of self, status, and culture? How can we reframe the traditional space as a site of cultural encounter between East and West?
