"The Ramadan Moon." Short film introducing the Huawei P30 Pro

While trying to crack the concept for Huawei's first Ramadan campaign I had a hunch. Our latest product had the longest digital zoom yet seen on a smart phone and can take a picture-perfect photo of the moon. To connect this feature with the Ramadan moon, I knew I should seek the help of experts: I decided to set up a meeting with the folks at the National Center of Meteorology.

The head astronomer worked in a circular building that served as a giant telescope. He told me stories of the old days when the UAE was just a series of villages. Years ago, he told us, the the eldest man in the village would be selected to trek to the highest point in town. While there, he would estimate the arrival of the hilal moon - the perfect crescent-shaped moon that signals the beginning of Ramadan - all without precise tools. This nugget of history would become our tale of three young children searching for the hilal with their grandfather, holding wonder in one hand and their Huawei P30 clutched in the other.
